Tom Crean: Big Ten Twitter King

Tom Crean has a lot to say - on the court and off.

Tom Crean has a lot to say – on the court and off.

Tom Crean is the undisputed Twitter king of Big Ten coaches. The frenetic Hoosier coach has more Twitter followers and has Tweeted more than the rest of the Big Ten coaches combined:

Coach Followers Following Tweets
Tom Crean 98,740 120 5,312
Tim Miles 37,025 59 2,571
John Beilein 14,895 27 314
Tubby Smith 12,487 45 82
Pat Chambers 9,876 824 1,621
John Groce 9,033 27 159
Matt Painter 5,640 19 7
Bill Carmody 800 23 1
Fran McCaffery* NA
Bo Ryan* NA
Thad Matta*
Tom Izzo*

Crean Tweets as much as he paces on the sideline during games – nonstop. He discusses players, games, university issues, other sports, his brothers-in-law and – almost daily – Bible verses.

It all makes for a very entertaining and engaging way to follow Indiana basketball.

What is notable is the level of activity in-season. It has barely slowed, if it all, while  others – such as Beilein and Groce – haven’t Tweeted since the season began.

* There are accounts for Matta and Izzo, but it wasn’t clear whether they were real. Matta’s appears to be new but is protected and has zero Tweets, while Izzo’s has 7,112 followers and nine Tweets that largely focused on things you wouldn’t think Izzo would discuss via social media. But there it is.

We couldn’t find any for McCaffery or Ryan – and that last one is a shame. The world deserves access to spur of the moment, unvarnished thoughts from Bo Ryan. I imagine them being in ALL CAPS.
