The Wall Street Journal notes that Michigan State is on the cusp of going undefeated at home in both football and basketball – something few major conference schools have done this century:
But the Spartans are one victory away. After going 7-0 at home during the football season, Michigan State is 17-0 at the Breslin Center entering Sunday’s regular-season finale against Ohio State. The last home loss in either sport came in a basketball game more than a year ago—a 20-point defeat to Purdue on Feb. 27, 2011. Michigan State hasn’t lost a home football game since falling to Penn State on Nov. 21, 2009.
Since 2000, only nine major-conference teams have gone undefeated at home in both football and basketball in the same academic year. Three of those teams went on to win the national championship in basketball—Maryland in 2002, Florida in 2007 and Kansas in 2008.
Michigan would have done it this year as well, if not for the loss to Purdue last week.
