George Sipple of the Free Press Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio are trying to look on the bright side of things for the Spartans:
Playing in the Outback Bowl in Tampa rather than the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., might benefit Michigan State down the road. …
The extra time in Florida could help the Spartans land future recruits from the Sunshine State, specifically the Tampa area.
“Florida obviously has great high school football,” coach Mark Dantonio said. “You recruit against everybody in America when you go down there.
“Obviously the media attention that we’re going to receive down there, as we’re there, is going to give us an opportunity to have people look at us a little bit more, find out more about us as individuals, and as people and as a program. This can be an advantage for us, rather than to be someplace else.”
So there’s that. But I’m guessing if we’re talking about top-flight recruits, they aren’t picking their schools off of fluff pieces in the Tampa Tribune between Christmas and New Year’s.
